Brands

Two companies currently make MTB power meter pedals: Garmin and SRM. Both of these power meters use SPD cleats. Garmin makes the Rally XC. This power meter was introduced in early 2021 and is very popular. It has proven to be reliable and can also transition into a road pedal (with the purchase of a conversion kit), which is a nice bonus. It is however a bit on the larger size…more on that later.

The SRM X-Power is also popular and is available in both a standard SPD version, as well as a flat pedal version. It can also be purchased in a variety of colors.

Power Measurement Options

As mentioned above, you have the choice of a single-sided pedal that measures power from one leg, or a dual-sided pedal that measures power from both legs. Dual-sided pedals are usually more accurate. In addition, they are also able to measure independent left/right leg power.

Price

The Garmin Rally XC is the most affordable MTB power meter pedal. You can buy the XC100 (single-sided) for $699 or the XC200 (dual-sided) for $1,199. The SRM X-Power starts at $999 (single-sided) and goes to $1,299 (dual-sided). SRM also makes a Flat MTB power meter pedal which sells for $1,499 (dual-sided). This is of course pricey…but it’s nice to be able to offer customers a flat pedal option.

Cleats

All of these MTB power meter pedals use standard Shimano SPD mountain bike cleats (included). The exception to this is the Flat pedal of course, which doesn’t use cleats.

Installation

All of these pedals install just like a normal pedal, and therefore the installation process is very simple and only takes a minute. This also means you can move them from bike to bike easily.

Power Measurement

The single-sided version of these MTB power meter pedals measure power from one leg. The dual-sided versions measure both legs. The dual-sided versions are also able to measure independent left/right power.

ANT+/Bluetooth SMART

All of these power meter MTB pedals are dual ANT+ and Bluetooth SMART compatible. Therefore, you can use them with any bike computer, smartphone or indoor training app such as Zwift.

Batteries

The Garmin Rally XC uses LR44/SR44 or CR1/3N batteries. The SRM X-Power uses a rechargeable battery.

Weight

The SRM X-Power (SPD version) is the lightest MTB power meter pedal at 172 grams per pedal. The X-Power Flat pedal is next at 205 grams per pedal. This is followed by the Garmin Rally XC which weighs 222 grams per pedal. Please note, Garmin intentionally its pedal robust as they want it to be able to withstand the harshest conditions, including pedal strikes.
